is this normal after filling cavity?!


Question: Is this normal after filling cavity?
on friday i got a cavity filled. later that night after a few hours i had dinner, a little after i ate i got a toothache. i was eating meat though and idk if it could have been that? yesterday i ate ice cream and it gave me a minor toothache. but when i had dinner it didnt give me any problems at all when chewing.

is it normal for that to happen? should i stay away from eating ice cream because its cold for awhile?

It can be normal for a tooth to feel sensitive to hot or cold foods or to pressure when newly filled. This usually lasts about 2 weeks. This is especially true if the filling was particularly deep. However if the pain starts to get worse, begins to last longer, keeps you awake at night or you notice any swelling, then you should contact your dentist.
Pain from teeth filled with composite (white filling) rather than amalgam (metal filling) may also be caused by shrinkage of the filling material during the curing of the restoration. This occurs if the tooth is filled in one go, rather than being built up in increments. In this case the filling may need replacing.



Yes the new filling can be sensitive for a while. Eat your ice cream on the other side!
