Should I go with a permanent retainer?!

Question: Should I go with a permanent retainer?
I'm getting my braces off next week, and I'd really like to hear from someone who has a permanent retainer. I'm thinking of getting a permanent one, but I want to know more about it first.

Are they uncomfortable/do they cause irritation?
Are there any drawbacks I should know about?
How bad are they about catching food and whatnot?
Are they a pain to brush and/or floss?
Are they really "permanent?" (I've heard they're not.)
Would I be better off going with a removable old-school retainer? (I've had the old kind before and it was fine- I'm just trying to avoid the hassle is all.)
If I wanted to, could I have the permanent retainer removed and switch to an old-school one instead?
What will it look like? (Is it just a wire?) Will it show at all when I smile?

I know that everyone's orthodontic situation is unique, so if you wouldn't mind, please give me a little bit of background information about what you've had done so that I'll know whether or not our situations are similar. Thanks in advance!

I have a permanent retainer. Congrats on getting your braces off :)

1.) You cant really tell you have one after a while
2.) No draw backs, just I think it hurts when you get them taken out
3.) They dont catch food too often not any worse than braces
4.) No, they are 100xs easier then brushing braces
5.) No, they are not permanent you can get it out in 2-4 years maybe
6.) No! They are a pain!
7.)Yes, but you'd have to pay another $100 to get the old school one
8.) It depends on whether is top or bottum... Top yes, the wire shows like a regular retainer bottum not really the wires on the back

Had top braces for two years and still have bottum braces still on! :)
