I've been there.

No whitening toothpaste is any good - the percentage of the bleaching agent (if any) is far too low.

The only real solution is to visit your dentist to get a gum shield made & a supply of carbamide peroxide. That's what I did.

Ensure you use carbamide peroxide, not hydrogen peroxide. The former is less likely to cause tooth sensitivity. You'll get tooth sensitivity in any event but mine was fine with carbamide peroxide but not with hydrogen peroxide (I touched my two front teeth with my tongue & got a shooting pain sensation).

Don't go for high percentages of carbamide peroxide - people do to get more rapid bleaching but it has been linked with cancer (I believe - google it). I think 15% is the maximum strength recommended but again, check youself - I am not a doctor or dentist so I'm not giving advice, just a pointer for you to discuss with a dentist.

A friend did the cheap version - got a mould online & ordered the carbamide peroxide online. I can;t see why my treatment with my dentist was any better (save that it is always safer havign a personal consultation - but you pay for it).

Having white teeth is great. But don't go for a high concentration of carbamide peroxide.

1. I whitened my teeth.

2. See link below.

'Dr Stemmer says: Calling this toothpaste a whitening product is perhaps misleading. This paste will not bleach teeth - it will only remove stains. Its low abrasion formula is important and there is evidence to show that baking soda can help to remove stains from teeth. Baking soda is a safe ingredient to find in toothpaste. Verdict: It won't whiten teeth, but it is a good toothpaste to use to keep discolouration at bay'.

Bleaching with Carbamide peroxide has been shown to be a good, safe, effective method to bleach teeth.
10% has come out in studies to be a good strength - good whitening, and low sensitivity.
While doing it avoid the obvious tea, coffee, redwine etc. And the more you have these, the more often you may need to re-lighten the teeth.
Trays from the internet will not be fitting as well as ones from the dentist so you are likely to ingest more bleach - weigh up price Vs this & decide.
Have heard no credible evidence of a link with cancer.
The carb peroxide breaks down to hydrogen peroxide - so sensitivity is likely to be due to the strength, rather than a genuine difference - Carb-peroxide at 10% is a safe choice. No toothpastes will lighten teeth - they may keep stains at bay
hope that helps

Once I got my braces off, I was given Ultra Crest Whitening strips. I used it for a few days and they worked great. The only problem was there was a tint of red in my eyes and a tint in yellow in my teeth. I didn't want to make my teeth whiter than my eyes or else my teeth would look fake. oh and just a warning: it brightens your gums too! Make sure that the top of the strip is above where your gums show (if that makes sense) when you smile.
