Do your baby teeth affect your permanent teeth?!

Question: Do your baby teeth affect your permanent teeth?
For example: you have cavities and some of your baby teeth fall out. My mom says they don't but my step dad says they do.

Answers:

It depends on age, really. Deciduous teeth do help guide permanent teeth as they descend, to some extent, and keep the appropriate spacing in the jaws. If they are lost too early, crowding and other problems can result. If the person is close to getting their permanent teeth it becomes less important.
