What is root canal, and can you tell if you need it?!

Question: What is root canal, and can you tell if you need it?
I remember having it a few years ago when i was 11, all i remember was that he took the nerve out because i was in so much agony from him doing the root canal

I havent been to the dentist for5years now, my teeth seem to be fine, i never have any pain from chewing or anything, will i need root canal because i haven't gone for so long?

Dont give me a lecture saying 'you should not of left it that long' and other stuff

And dont says just because you think your teeth are fine doesnt mean they are i also know that aswell

just give me a straight answer, and basically how can you tell if you need it

No. A root canal IS the procedure of removing the nerves to your tooth to stop the pain receivers from going to that tooth. Its not something you get at a check up. Just brush and floss like 2 times before you go to the dentist and you should be fine.

you're a saucy one aren't you?! I'll give any advice I like. you're on the friggen world wide web for sh*t sake. now that being said you can't ignore anything for five years and hope it'll be fine. you're being a wimp! suck it up dude! you need to go to a dentist for x-rays to find out if you need a root canal.

also, your first sentence makes no sense. a root canal is when they take out the ROOT or NERVE of your tooth. it's painless nowadays. they freeze your mouth and you feel nothing at all. they drill, dig and get the root out...clean the area...fill in the space where the root was and then they either put a filling on the tooth or a crown. the most annoying part of getting it done is waiting for the freezing to come out of your mouth. they use so much that it takes hours to come back to normal.
