Why do the teeth hurt when eating cold food or drinking cold drinks?!

Question: Why do the teeth hurt when eating cold food or drinking cold drinks?
I have a friend that has a concern about his teeth. He says that whenever he eats something cold or drinks cold beverages his left top teeth hurt. He says they don't hurt when he is chewing hot food, but only when it's cold. it's not the whole mouth. Only on that one side. What could it be?

Just sensitive teeth/nerves. He should tell his dentist. There are actually toothpastes designed for sensitive teeth and gums on the market, so I'm sure the dentist can even go one step further with something to ease the discomfort.

Because the nerve endings in your tooth are exposed, causing the pain

who could have some rotting teeth or its just sensitive to the cold

a cavity? maybe he bit down on something hard and his teeth are sore from that?
