What could be the cause of my mouth ulcers?!

Question: What could be the cause of my mouth ulcers?
I have had this problem for years now. Its always seem to get muliple ulcers and they're always quite severe. They seem to last weeks at a time and will re occur within days after. I use treatments like bonjela but they dont really work, the last time i used the one time treatment from bonjela, it made my mouth ulcer worse, increasing the size of it by almost double. I have been to a doctor but they dont seem to take me seriously, i had a blood test and heard nothing from them about it. I know its not exactly cancer or anything, but constantly having multiple ulcers that get worse when you try heal them is a total nightmare, its so painful at times especially when i wake up on a morning. What do you think it could be?

The most common type of mouth ulcers are called 'apthous' ulcers. They are probably viral. (Though no virus has been identified.)This means they should not be given antibiotics as there have no effect. There behaviour is similar to cold sores, in that they are recurrent, come out when we are run down and we never seem to develop immunity. Here the similarity ends, because unlike herpetic cold sores there is no treatment.

Each ulcer lasts about 10 days, but you can get further crops erupting, so each episode may last longer than that.

Ice,ice cream and cold soft items, become the easiest things to eat. Teething gels sometimes help. There is now only one prescription drug for apthous ulcers, Corlan Pellets, it is a steroid, it only reduces the nipping a bit and does not hasten resolution.

GP for more years than I care to remember

If you haven't tried it already, try a course of iron and vitamin supplements, including vitamin C, B12 and zinc. Also, be aware that stress can cause or aggravate many physical symptoms, so if you have a stressful lifestyle for any reason, look for changes you can make to alleviate the stress.

Edit: Ah, if Chris's cause is the same as yours, you might also look into probiotic mouth wash. The goal here is to replace the bad bacteria with good bacteria. Try Googling ‘probiotic breath treatment’. It's worth a shot!

Next time it happens and it is multiple ulcers run it past your dentist and see what he can see and says. This is also important as well if you are a smoker or binge on alcohol.

Sucking bitter lemon sweets give some relief as well.

But it can also be linked to being run down, so eat sensibly, exercise and get plenty of sleep.

I had mouth ulcers once years ago and the doctor told me they were caused by a bacteria in my mouth. He said I was either not thawing out meat properly before I cooked it or, I was not cooking it thoroughly. He was right, I changed my methods in the kitchen and haven't had them since. Hope this helps.

Chris

Might be what you eat? If you eat a lot of things high in acidity you might get a lot of ulcers. Or something else. But, look to your diet first. I'm not 100% sure of what causes ulcers, I just know that if I eat a lot of lemons or something then I get them.

Dr Frank is right... They are mostly apthous ulcers. Most commonly associated with high stress activities, say many students get them right during or just before their exams. Drink lots of fluids, apply topical gels for pain relief and most importantly, de-stress yourself.

am a dentist

My experience is that mouth ulcers come along with acne at puberty, damn them to hell!! They go away in time. However the medical profession - a bunch of idiots - may have come up with something. Don't know.

thats because of your anaerobic microorganisms in your mouth..they do not need oxygen n your pain is at height after a sleep when your mouth is closed..so you have to consult a general physician and not dentist actually !

Ulcers are mostly caused by stress or something big changing in your living style. Along those lines.

Hopeful dentist :)
