What to expect when I go in to get my root canal?!

Question: What to expect when I go in to get my root canal?
Hi. I just went to the dentists today and they said I'd have to get a root canal on February 2nd. They put me on antibiotics just in case I have an infection 3 times a day. Well anyways, I'm 13 and I'm really scared to get a root canal. My dentist is very nice and gentle but it's still pretty scary. He assured me I wouldn't even feel it, but I still have a few questions.
1. How long will it take?
2. How sore will I be after wards?
3. What are some ways to pass the time?
4. If he gives me that plastic thing to hold my mouth open, can I fall asleep?

1. The root canal itself shouldnt take very long at all. Did they tell you how long the appointment is? They will take an xray or two to to check the progress of the root canal therapy. This is important so they can be sure they are getting all of the infection/nerve tissue out. The entire appointment shouldnt take more than 45 minutes to an hour. Occasionally, they may have to do the root canal in two appointments. Neither one is a big deal.
2. The root canal tooth feels funny to bite on for a few days. You shouldnt have any "pain" from the procedure but with any dental work, you may have some sensitivity for awhile.
3. You will be in the chair and if you can bring some music along, that will help. It will go faster than you think.
4. It isnt going to take long enough for you to worry about falling asleep. If you do, thats fine! It means you are comfortable! :)
Good luck with your appointment.
It will go well and your tooth will be great.

I am a dental assistant

I've had 5 root canals. None of them hurt in any way. Dentists do not cause pain these days. Mine took around an hour. I've heard that some can take more than one visit. Chances are you cannot fall asleep, as you need to keep your mouth open. You may feel some discomfort, but no real pain. It will take around 6 hours for the numbness to go away. The only real pain from a root canal is paying the bill. They cost alot.
