Question about dental crowns?!

Question: Question about dental crowns?
I'm getting a root canal and crown soon on my tooth and I'm kinda scared about what it'll look like. Why is it that sometimes there's a blue line along the gum line but sometime it doesn't show? How would I know what mine will look like?

Answers:

The crown you describe is porcelain over a surgical steel base. There are also crowns that are porcelain over gold, solid steel or solid gold, and solid porcelain. The full porcelain crown offers the best cosmetic result, and your dentist can advise you if it would be a good functional choice for your tooth and bite. Do tell him or her of your concerns. Note that the various kinds of crowns have different prices.

Another thing you can do with any crown is to maintain excellent oral hygiene to minimize any receding gum issues.

Used to work for a dentist.

Hi Katie,

The blue line is the metal beneath the porcelain of the crown which is not masked by opaquer or porcelain at the crowns' edge. If you want to avoid the blue line you must do two things. First, make sure to tell your dentist that this is a big concern for you and that you want the margin (edge) of your crown below your gum line so it won't show. Second, ask your dentist for a porcelain margin on the side of the crown facing your lip. The porcelain margin may cost more it will most certainly work for years to come.

Take Care.

The line above the crown can be seen if the gum is receding from the tooth. It does happen with age, but more frequently from improper daily care. Newer crowns are overlaid over gold and are not supposed to do this as much. Ask about any special care.

I would worry more about making certain the tooth is the same color as your other teeth. I don't like seeing someone who has that one really white tooth in front that stands out. Your dentist should have a color match system that he can show you the color that he's choosing and then you can see how it looks.

Just had two replaced, myself. And I'm happy with the color match.

if you keep your gums clean the dark line will not come along the crown.
if your gums are not clean they get inflamed or recede from the crown edge and a dark edge is seen.
