I lost my retainer and my teeth shifted?!

Question: I lost my retainer and my teeth shifted?
Ok so I had braces for many years and got them taken off nearly 4 years ago. I wore the retainer religiously for about a year and then stopped. My teeth were fine. But now my teeth have started to shift a bit. I have found my retainer and want to put it in, its EXTREMELY painful at the moment but i am willing to do this if it means my teeth will be straight again, but my question is... i have gone at least a year without my retainer so will wearing it now still give me a chance or is it too late? and how long will i need to wear it for so they are permanently straight?

i've had no braces for about 3 years now. i wore it just like you...then stopped. i decided start wearing it regularly. i have now worn my retainer(top&bottom) since december. I took a pic on the first day. and i notice a HUGE difference! so YES! Continue wearing your retainer! It will pay off in the long run!
