In North America:
1. Prerequisite courses at a university level for dental school. Some schools may require a Bachelor's degree that will take approximately 3 years.
2. Dental Aptitude Test to apply for dental school.
3. Graduate from dental school at or near the top of your class (4 years for dental school)
4. Complete a residency program in orthodontics (2-3 years)
Keep in mind that orthodontics is one of the most highly competitive graduate dental programs around. There are slightly over 300 positions annually available. High class ranking, excellent boards scores, research, outstanding references, completing a dental residency following dental school, and standout achievements on your CV will be helpful.
