Do I go to the doctor first or to the dentist? In serious pain, please PLEASE help!

Question: Do I go to the doctor first or to the dentist? In serious pain, please PLEASE help me with some advice?
Hey folks,I'l make this as short as possible. My back wisdom tooth has gone into rage mode, and I'm pretty sure that it has become impacted or whatever. Anyway,I'm pretty sure that the huge hard lump beside it on the cheek side of the gum is an abscess and its pretty effing swollen. So I'm carting myself off to the dentist tommorow to get this knobhead tooth out,but heres the part of my question I need advice on-If I go to the dentist, will they just send me off to the doctor to get antibiotics to get rid of the abscess before taking out the tooth,or will they (fingers crossed) nail this tooth and treat the abscess at the dentist. Cheers for the answers, means alot,in absolute agony over this.

Dentist.

In the meantime, the best pain killers you have.

Also, Half a tea-spoon of bicarb and half a tea-spoon of salt, dissolved itno luke warm water. Rinse around the mouth for a few minutes, mainly in the area that hurts. This helped when it happened to me last month (I was advised by a dentist on this).

The dentist is the place to go. They can prescribe antibiotics, so when you go, they will just write you a prescription for some antibiotics. They probably won't take the tooth out there and then - it is best to deal with any infection before doing an extraction. However, the antibiotics should kick in fairly quickly - normally in about a couple of days - and you should feel less pain. If it hasn't eased well after the course has finished, then they can prescribe other antibiotics if required, but if it has worked fine, then they can proceed to deal with the offending tooth.

Your dentist is your first port of call, they can usual deal with it, if not they will then refer you to an oral surgeon who will access you and take out the tooth, either way YOU WILL get it sorted!

Go to the doctor first. Dentists are just maintaining the health of your gums and teeth but doctors are curing/treating pains to prevent infection.

See the dentist They prescribe antibiotics too.

dentist

To the dentest.

If you have an infection (and it sounds like you do) the dentist will not be able to adequately numb the area to extract the tooth.

Your first step should be to go to the dentist, not the doctor. They will both prescribe anitbiotics, but sometimes the doctor prescribes something the dentist doesn't want you to take. (Most doctors will rx Pennicillin, most Dentists will rx ammoxicillin).

Your first appointment will most likely result in an exam and an xray, along with a rx for ammoxicillin. You will need to take the rx for about a week, return, then have the tooth extracted. Some dentists may let you choose whether you want it removed that day or not, with the warning that the anesthetic will most likely fail (in which case I highly do not recommend doing).

A warm saltwater rinse will help to ease the pain a bit as well as an otc pain med.

Good luck!

Dentist will more then likely give you medication to treat whatever is going on in your mouth (infection, or whatever) If you are just walking in without an appt. they may give you a prescription then schedule a new appt. to get your wisdom tooth removed. It's not always the case but for my insurance here that's how they would do it. I've had similar situation. Right now dentist put me on penicillin for infection and 800 mg of IB profen until my appt. in MAYYY to get them pulled.

Just be sure to rinse with warm salt water as often as you can it will aid in keeping your tooth area clean keep it in your mouth and swoosh it around for as long as you can tolerate it. I've taken all pain killers (non prescription) and best one i've found is Advil/IB profen. Good luck to you. Tooth pain is no joke!

Hi ,

Bleeding gums is a common occurrence but it is not a good thing. My gums used to bleed when brushing my teeth. Since going to see my dentist on a regular basis and having them scaled and polished my gums are so much healthier.

They feel clean and I no longer have bad breathe.

My dentist said bleeding gums if not treated will lead to more serious gum disease which if extreme can lead to tooth loss but also more at risk of heart disease.

I was so concerned when he told me that he told me about a video which will help me to understand the situatiojn which had a link to a Free Gum report .

This certainly helped me and if you are serious about your mouth and health in general get to the link I have put in the resource box below.

Get rid of bleeding gums and get your smile back. See the video now!!

The dentist will do an examination and then an xray.

If infection is present then he will not be able to go into the area and do anything until it has had a course of antibiotics and responded to them.
Believe me you would not want him to try to remove it with the infection present as the infection means the local injection will not work very well.

He will make a clinical decision based on the xray whether to extract it himself or to refer you to a local hospital for removal at a later date.

Oh by the way he can prescribe a huge range of drugs that includes antibiotics!!!
