How or where can I tighten my wire removable retainer?!

Question: How or where can I tighten my wire removable retainer?
I've had my braces off for 3 years now, and i've worn my retainer every night for 3 going on 4 years. My teeth have still moved a bit and I would like to get my retainer tightened.

I know I can get my retainer tightened by my orthodontists; the only problem is I now live 3 hours away from my orthodontist.

Is it too risky to tighten it myself? Can I have my dentist tighten my retainer? Can I go to another orthodontist for free?

If its of any use, I live in Orange County, California.

Answers:

Do not tighten the retainer yourself. You might overdo it resulting in excessive forces to the tooth and thus a probable damage. It is best to get it by your orthodontist, else visit a dentist nearby whi will be willing to help you out.

am a dentist
