my mother 80 year old got to have a tooth out she is on a low dose asprins should she stop taking them she bleeds badily if a slight cut she was put on asprin 10 years ago after heart replacement valve any help would be appreacited

Answers:

You are right to be concerned. The aspirin could make her post-extraction bleeding worse. However, your mother should NOT stop taking it until she (and her dentist) have talked with her doctor.

The doctor will probably agree to stop the aspirin for a few days. However, in some patients, it is better to continue the aspirin therapy while taking other measures to control bleeding at the extraction site. Is your mother also taking other drugs that affect bleeding, like warfarin (Coumadin)? If so, the doctor will have to think about whether and how to stop those as well. She might need to taper off rather than just stop cold.

In any event, your mother, her doctor, and her dentist have to approach this as a team and decide what is best in her circumstances. Good luck to both of you.

Of much more importance is the fact she will prob need antibiotic cover, due to the fact that she has internal surgical work (ie a valve replacement) done on her heart.

More than likely she can stay on the aspirin. Such decisions should be discussed beforehand with her dentist...... and the dentist can, if he thinks it necessary, discuss it with her doctor

Aspirin stays in the blood stream for at least 7 days so it probably won't make any difference if the extractions very soon! Some dentists do advise their patients to avoid aspirin for 4 days prior to extraction so your best bet is to call the dentist who is doing it and ask them what they want. Normally bleeding in patients taking aspirin can be stopped by a dentist in surgery by the patient biting down on gauze however every patient/ dentist is different.

She will need to tell the dentist that she is taking low dose aspirin along with a list of her other drugs at the time of the treatment.

But a good dentist will have done a medical history review and drug history at the check up with a patient of this age so he may already know this information.

Even low dose aspirin may have a marginal effect on bleeding tendency, however it is not usually stopped for dental wok. Best if she asks her dentist who should have a full list of her current medication anyway.

GP for more years than I care to remember

you & your mum should see her doctor and tell the dentist also

She needs to discuss this with her DR and Dentist.
