I think I have TMJ, what can I do?!

Question: I think I have TMJ, what can I do?
About 2 years ago I had one of my molars extracted, it had a crown on it and also an abscess underneath it. The dentist had a hard time getting it out, it took almost 20 minutes of pulling and pushing. Anyway, a few months after this I woke up one day and wasn't able to open my mouth like usual. It lasted a couple of weeks and then came back a few months later. That time it lasted a bit longer. Well the last time this happened was over a year ago and it's been this way ever since. It hurts if I try to force it open anymore. And I know i should've been to a dentist long ago but I can't afford it and i don't have insurace. I've done some research and I'm pretty sure it is TMJ. I have been saving money and after taxes this year i will definately be able to afford seeing a dentist. But i was wondering if there was anything i could do at home to alleviate the pain, discomfort and possibly be able to open my mouth a bit. I'm suffering here, I haven't been able to eat a hot dog or hamburger in I don't know how long. I have been having to smoosh sandwiches together in order to fit them in my mouth. It is a horrible experience. It is even a struggle for me to floss and I am very picky about keeping my teeth clean. PLEASE HELP, ANY ADVISE PLEASE????? I just want to be able to eat normal again....

Thank You!

Surgery is one way to correct the problem, but I would suggest seeing an Osteopath that uses the Southernland method. A Naprapath could also relieve the problem. Either way is better than surgery. BTW, my daughter had TMJ and the Osteopath resolved her problem with a couple of visits.

Hello Dear,
what you are describing here looks rather pathetic.

Even though you've said you cannot afford to see a dentist now but that is exactly what you need to do.
You seem to be describing very long standing trismus(difficulty in mouth opening) that could have arisen from a number of cause including infection around your back teeth.
You could also have suffered some form of injury to your temporo mandibular joint which is now manifesting as limited mouth opening.

For a few days before you see a dentist, chewing sugarless gum can help to release tensed muscles that cause limited mouth opening but that is of course for early cases. From your description, whatever the initial cause of the limited mouth opening, things must have escalated because the tissues get organized over time making it more difficult to free the jaws.

Also, taking analgesics over a protracted period of time without medical advice could prove fatal as you could wipe out your liver with frightening consequences!

Now, you have waited too long for no fault of yours but you risk not been able to get your jaws free without surgery--- so you must see a dentist now--- do what you must do, burrow money from your employer, from friends, from a charity-- whatever is legitimate......

I really empathize with you.

Wish I could help!!

Cheers!
