If you yourself know you haven't been taking proper care of your teeth and think there may be a cavity, you should definitely check in with a dentist. Depending on your insurance, most consultations and general cleanups are covered 100%.

In general it's good to take care of your teeth otherwise you'll be in a lot of pain with cavities and in the future, they could just end up falling out. Chewing with dentures is no fun. Seen my grandparents eat and they can't taste the food like everyone else can anymore.

Brush, floss, mouthwash. They do say that the human mouth is one of the dirtiest things around.

What you describing is delving into the realms of periodontal medicine. It's not so much as the decay as is your gums. Gum disease could send you to the other side faster than you planned.
So, go on see a dentist, but beyond that, decide to start brushing and flossing in order to achieve impeccable oral hygiene.

Be wary of prolonged use of mouth washes as one could alter your taste, stain your oral tissue sand cause gland swelling in extreme cases.
You stand to gain everything by so doing.

Cheers!!
