I would get a second opinion. The reason he might be telling you that you need a crown is because your tooth is so decayed that a filling won't do the job.
Hello...OK, you "cannot" do another filing under an existing one...There is no way to tell if all the decay has been removed. The old filing will have to be completely removed to insure all the decay has been dome away with. NOW, depending on how deep the decay goes and how much of the tooth is affected will determine whether or not a Crown id required...The Dentist should know that already through having taken an Xray....Also, if the decay goes to deep you will more than likely need a root canal as well, and that will no doubt insure you will need a crown. Good luck and I wish you well.

Either way, the old filling has to come out to allow the decay to be removed. After that, the risk is that too large a filling can split the tooth in half. That's why they elect to do a crown at that point. Either way, wait too long and you might end up with a crown and a root canal.
Used to work for a dentist.
When a cavity is too large the tooth is weakened and might break while eating if just filled and left alone.
The soluttion under such instances is to strenghten the remaining tooth substance by placing a crown over it.
This is a recognized practice all over the world-- so your dentist is right.
