i would trust your dentist and orthodontist they're probably more likely to be right. Also, its common to have your teeth pulled one of mine were and my friend's were.
How long it will take the "holes" to close will depend on how much excess space there is and that will vary with different patients so there is no set amount of time that applies to everyone.
