Can I chew gum with braces?!

Question: Can I chew gum with braces?
Ok so the orthodontist told me that I shouldn't chew gum, eat chips and other things like that...but almost all of my friends that have braces do those things daily. So should it be okay if i chew gum, eat chips and eat apples (without cutting them up)?

*Additional Details*
I have porcelain braces, and I only have them on 4 teeth (the four on the top right next to the front two teeth) because after I straighten out one tooth Ill be able to get Invisalign. I am only wearing braces for 2 months.

The honest truth is everything they tell you NOT to eat is perfectly fine. Everything will get stuck. So, eat whatever you want, but only after any soreness and anything not ordinary goes away. Try chewing gum after about a week of having the braces. But don't chew with invisalign, one of my friends has a horrible time with getting it out each time.

I have braces :/

Well I think you should try give it up because when you get Invisalign you will not be able to chew gum as it will get stuck to your trays. As for chips I really dont see how that is a problem, and apples, I guess it is really up to you (although I can see it being kind of painful to bite into an apple)

all my friends with braces do that too. Just be careful not to get the gum caught in your braces. For the apples, go ahead. Just floss afterward to get any remnents out. Its no fun looking at someone with food in their braces!
Have fun! What are your colors? You'll love the retainer after braces:)

I guess you can, just don't press it against your braces, keep chewing it at the back of your mouth with your molars (the far back teeth at the top and bottom)

I had braces for two years

You can chew sugar free gum with braces because it doesn't stick to your braces.
