Question: I had my teeth splinted or bonded together almost two weeks ago (my dentist is on vacation now)?
My gums still ache and now parts are swollen. Is this a normal process? The gums feel itchy, could I be allergic to the bonding compound?

My lower teeth were splinted together because they were weak.

Answers:

It is completely normal. I had my front two teeth bonded because of an accident. It wont take long to feel better. Wish you luck!

With the bond there, it makes it impossible to floss in that area. You likely have tartar and bacteria working their way down underneath the gums, which would cause swelling and inflammation. Depending on how far down the bond goes, you MIGHT be able to use those flossers/threaders that they have for people with braces but I don't think there would be enough room to do it without damaging the bond (so don't do it). Check with your dentist when she comes back for the best way to keep that area clean. In the meantime, use hot salt water. Dissolve about a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm-hot water. Take a mouthful and just hold it in that area for a couple of minutes before swishing and spitting it out. The heat will expand the area and the salt will help to draw out anything that might be stuck underneath the gums. Do this a couple of times a day.

they usually have a back up dentist call and find out
