Have I got gum disease?!

Question: Have I got gum disease?
When I pull my upper lip up I can see that on the upper gum the colour is dark red, IIs this normal? You can only notice it if you pull the top lip up. I don't feel any pain in the gums at all.

Hello
my upper gums are pink( next to the teeth) and higher up they go red and I floss once a day and brush 2 times a day and my gums look tight and healthy and do not bleed at all. Yours do sound the same as mine. If your gums look non puffy and do not bleed when flossed you do not have gum disease. So brush 2 times a day and not too hard and floss once a day to remove plaque and food a brush cannot reach. Eat a healthy diet full of fresh veggies and fruits( not too many acidic fruits as this can damage tooth enamel) and milk, yogurt, cheese and meat and fish. Avoid too much sugar which turns into plaque and avoid fizzy drinks and too much fruit juice. Boiled sweets and toffees are awful for teeth as they stay in the mouth for a long while and are full of sugar and are sticky. Apples are a tooth kind snack.

If you do not floss and start flossing your gums they may bleed to start. But this is normal so do not worry and keep flossing once a day before bed. After a few days the bleeding will stop as your gums repair themselves and become 100% healthy again. Flossing stops plaque building up and turning into tartar which is hard and causes your gums to recede and causes inflammation. Minor gum disease is totally fixable.

I also use a mouth wash at night before bed called Colgate Fluoigard which hardens tooth enamel and helps keep teeth and gums healthy.

Hope that helps

The easiest way to see if you have gum disease is by flossing. If your gum bleeds, you have gum disease. Swollen reddened gums are also a sign of gum disease.

If you DO have gum disease, it is very easily treated. Brush your teeth twice a day with a calcium containing toothpaste. Use an electric toothbrush if possible. Floss once a day. If gum disease is present, there will be bleeding and some pain, but this will disappear after a few days of flossing.

Use a mouthwash made of water and sodium bicarbonate, with some peppermint oil added for flavour. Sodium bicarbonate is a potent antacid, and this will help prevent bacterial growth in the mouth that cause disease. The bacteria responsible for tooth decay and gum disease, lactobacilli, LOVE an acid environment, so by neutralising the mouth, you inhibit bacterial growth.
