I'm scared about having teeth pulled, can you help?!

Question: I'm scared about having teeth pulled, can you help?
I'm having two top teeth extracted next week, I'm very scared of needles, I'm squeamish and never had this done before so I don't know what it'll be like. Even if I close my eyes I will still feel the needle (even if it's just briefly) and I think i'll hear the sound of my teeth being pulled...I am genuinely quite scared and worried I might have a panic attack or something, does anyone have any advice? Or at least describe the sensations during the extraction?

Answers:

Relax.

The needle is nothing. it will be a pinch. it will be uncomfortable. but the needle will remove all the rest of the pain. remember this. The needle hurts, but it is an ounce to save a ton later. The needle is your friend.

As for the sensations of an extratio... you will not (should not) feel pain. If you feel PAIN, let the dentist know, especially if you're just getting started. There are other ways that they have to make you go numb if you're still feeling pain when they get started (they generally involve needles and more novacaine, so I won't go into too much detail, but you won't feel anything more then a pinch and a sting)

What you WILL feel is pressure. you will feel them pressing in your jaw. you may feel the want to turn your head with the pressure. it feels kind of line... like someone reaching into your mouth and pushing firmly on your tooth or your gums.. only, no pain. just, pressure.

Lay back. keep your eyes closed and focus on your breathing. you will be laying there wondering 'are they about to start pulling? are they started yet? is that the feel if them doing something terrible to my mouth? Oh god, it's about to get worse'... and then, as your bracing for something horrible... they'll be telling you you're done. I don't think you'll hear anything.. they should have noisy little spit tubes slurping away next to your ears.

So. here's my advice. Don't. Panic.

Relax. it will be over quickly and I swear to god, it's worse in your mind, rightn ow, leading up to the moment.

You will hurt more the day after. but the actual process? it's not too bad. I promise. cross my heart.

If you need something to focus on.. memorize something, like the quote in my source, and repeat it to yourself. Learn it. understand it. Fear is your enemy here, not pain.

You'll be okay. Just breath.

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing......Only I will remain."

I have had over 14 teeth pulled in my 15 years, and every time I still think it's gonna suck but it really doesn't. It kinda depends on the dentist, when they just jab at you with their needle, it's not the best but it's not extremely painful. If they wiggle your cheek (haha that sounds funny) then it doesnt even hurt at all (for me anyway). When they pull the teeth out, most of the time you just feel pressure and that's it. The breaking sound gives me the chills and makes me wanna squirm every time, but it lasts like .02795486 seconds (now that's just a rough estimate lol) and then it's over. All in all, it's not too horrible, and sometimes it seems like they're giving you shots in unnecessary places, but believe me it helps. Good luck :)

Personal experience (:

You'll feel the needle but its feels like someone nips you really really quickly, I mean you have to really be concentrating to feel the needle. you don't feel your teeth being pulled because your mouth is numb, you may hear them clanging the equipment, and maybe a scraping sound as you tooth comes out but that's it. Nothing to worry about, just stay calm close your eyes, remember they are professionals and tell them not to show them your teeth, it happens in seconds, absolutely nothing to worry about
Good luck XD

When I had wisdom teeth pulled they gave me an IV of something. I didn't remember a thing! I was scared ahead of time as well. I actually was more afraid of the dentist than a major medical surgery. Crazy when I think about it. I could have died in the medical surgery but I was more afraid with dental! Advice, take someone with you to drive you. The stress is whats getting you freaked out. Close your eyes. Sing to yourself. Careful not to hold your breathe, instead focus on your breathing. Do the breathe in deeply for a slow count of 5, then out for a slow count of 5.

Don't be scared! Just remember that it will be fined. The only pain that you will feel is the injection of the anesthesia or pain re-leaver. after that, you will not feel pain anymore. Be brave, you can do that.

No worries,The dentist will give you a little sponge like a cigarette filter to bite on which numbs your gums, and you will not feel the needle believe me, i have ha 5 teeth extracted in 5 months and im scared of needles.
Ted.

. the needle is the worst part of all when they stick it in your gums. But when they pull the tooth out, its no problem since you won't feel any pain or anything. Don't worry. it will go by fast. I had several teeth pulled out before and it happened so quickly.

Just a pinch to numb.

If they numb it good, you'll only feel a bit of pressure.

Yes, you CAN hear the tooth being ripped out (worst part)

But, you will be ok :)

Distraction.
Take your earphones with your favourite music blasting in your napper.
Bring it on, Mr Dentist !!!

Don't like needles or dentists...... :-( x

The first thing to do, is to get your head around the fact that it WILL be extremely painful, at least for part of the process. The needle piercing it's way into your flesh will seem to last forever, and that part really hurts like hell, especially as it gets deep in. The teeth shouldnt be quite as bad; you will be numbed but theres no point in pretending that won't hurt too, you'll feel and hear the noises of them being torn from your mouth, all you can do is close your eyes and wait for it to be over with. Good luck with it.

Experience.

I've never had any teeth pulled, so I can't share my experience from that.

I have, however, had a ton of other dental work done, from fillings to root canals to crowns... so I've had that shot many many times. I'm also very scared of needles, much so to the point where I pass out every time I get a shot or blood drawn. That said, the shot that I get in my mouth each time I go to the dentist, doesn't bother me at all. I don't pass out, and I rarely feel pain.

My dentist usually gives me novocaine first, before giving me the shot, and that probably helps a lot. You should ask your dentist to that first. What it does is it numbs your cheek/lip so that you won't feel the shot. Once that is given, the shot is given to numb the area around your tooth/teeth. In all of my experience, it's felt like pressure or sometimes a pinch. Yes, there have been a few times where I have felt a bit of pain, but it only lasts a second; and even then, I think it hurts a lot less than when they draw blood from your arm. Most of the time I just feel the pressure, though, and no pain.

Because of the shot, I usually don't feel anything during the procedure either. And the few times that I have, I told my dentist, and she'd give me stuff to numb my mouth more, so that I wouldn't feel it.

Good luck. :-)
