What exactly is a root fracture?!

Question: What exactly is a root fracture?
I recently had a bridge put in the front of my mouth. Not soon after the dentist applied the cement to hold the bridge in place, I felt the most excruciating pain of my life. They did an x-ray, and i had to have a root canal on the tooth they used as the anchor for the bride. After the root canal, my tooth is still hurting even though I had the root canal. The head dentist said that it might be what is called a root fracture, but he did not go into details. Now my teeth are highly sensitive to air, food, cold, heat and it feels like the bridge is on too tight. The gum area around tooth is constantly inflamed, and it hurts to floss between the bridge work.
Please help

A root fracture is not good news. It means the tooth has broken in half from top to bottom all the way down to the root. This is one of those very, very rare cases where a tooth cannot be saved. Did the dentist say anything else? Did he schedule another appointment in the next few weeks? If he just gives you a 6-month appointment, then maybe it's not as serious as I thought.

root fracture means broken (cracked) tooth. That would make a tooth really hurt, but not the one that had the root canal treatment, it would be a tooth next to it. The gums hurt because whenever they put a crown on a tooth, which is what they do after a root canal, they do a lot of work down to the gums that makes the gums sore for a few days
