Getting braces off later today?!

Question: Getting braces off later today?
Ok well I went to my dentist the other day and he told me that my teeth were going bad b/c I had my braces for too long (around 5 years)...
I had my rubber bands for more than 6 months and my orthodontist was telling me that my teeth weren't going to move anymore. So last week I volunteered to get my braces off.

Am I doing the right thing? My teeth are straight but I still have an overbite.

Answers:

Hi Jenny Lee,

Removing your braces early may result in them moving back to their original position. However, seen as your teeth are going bad, you are probably better of taking out your braces early so they are easier to repair now rather than later.

You should ask your orthodontist for the advantages and disadvantages of removing your braces early and what he would do in your situation.

Yes! I think 5 years is too long for braces anyways, and overbites are completely normal, as long as the space between your top and bottom teeth isn't too wide! I've had mine for two years (4th to 6th grade) but I got them taken off early cause I was going to move. I accidentally bent my top retainer right after I moved and my bottom supposedly permanent retainer also fell out. It seemed too complicated to get my retainers fixed, so i didn't, but my teeth are still really straight two years after I got my braces off! Remember to keep brushing! (:

Lots of people have overbites so as long as you don't overbite so much it looks unnatural you are fine. You have had them on way too long so yes, get them off. Otherwise, you will start having more problems.
