Teeth sensitive after scaling?!

Question: Teeth sensitive after scaling?
I just went yesterday but I was wondering what i could use to relieve the pain. It's like a constant sensitive, tingling feeling on my bottom front teeth. Also they want me to go back for a second scaling this week and then a "regular" cleaning. I thought this was a bit excessive. What do u guys think? Is this dentist just being greedy?

I haven't had a cleaning in about 4 yrs but I brush/floss everyday and my teeth are actually in good shape. I think after yesterday's cleaning they look clean and free of that tartar junk. :)

Try using Sensodyne tooth paste. Also, if you tell the dentist/dental hygeinist, they may have some stuff that they can apply to your teeth to make them less sensitive. Its normal to be a little sensitive after a deep cleaning. Some people just tend to collect more calculus (really hard dental plaque) on their teeth. Maybe the dentist/hygeinist was not able to clean all the teeth so that's why they want you to go back. If you are concerned that they are being greedy, there is no harm in asking, Why do I need another cleaning? As long as you are polite about it, I see no reason for not asking. You have a right to know why the dentist wants you to have this treatment.

Ibuprofen or Tylenol should relieve any pain.

Go back for the second scaling and the cleaning. Usually when a dentist scales your teeth it's because your have periodontal disease or the beginnings of periodontal disease. Even though you think your teeth look free of all the calculus and tarter you're not trained to see what a dentist sees. Also, scaling removes the calculus beneath the gum line so you're not going to see it anyway. The regular cleaning and prophylaxis is meant to get the tarter and plaque from the visible tooth surface that you're missing with brushing and flossing and for cavity screening. This is not the dentist being greedy, it's the dentist trying to prevent further periodontal disease and subsequent tooth loss. Even though you think you're doing a good job with dental hygiene, no one is perfect which is why you need regular cleanings.
