What does root canal do?!

Question: What does root canal do?
Answers:

A root canal is the space within the root of a tooth. It is part of a naturally occurring space within a tooth that consists of the pulp chamber (within the coronal part of the tooth), the main canal(s), and more intricate anatomical branches that may connect the root canals to each other or to the surface of the root. Root canal is also a colloquial term for a dental operation, endodontic therapy, wherein the pulp is cleaned out, the space disinfected and then filled.

Hello
I had 2 root canals and they were not painful, but took a long while. First your dentist should x ray the teeth and see if the nerve and roots are infected. If they are you will need a root canal on the tooth. The dentist will inject your mouth so you are numb. They will then drill a hole into the tooth and then use long thin files to file and clean out your root canals. Large teeth have more root canals than small teeth so take longer. My large back tooth had 4 root canals to clean out. After the dentist has cleaned out the root canals they will then fill the tooth with stuff that kills off any remaining infection and then put a temp filling on th tooth to seal it. After 2-3 weeks you normally then go back and have the tooth x rayed again to check all infection has gone. If everything is ok they will remove the temp filling and either put a perm filling in or shape the tooth for a crown. If you need a crown you will have a temp crown fitted and have to go back in another 2-3 weeks to get that fitted. Most root canal teeth need a crown as they go brittle over time and also change colour, go grey.

So having a root canal does take 2-3 appointments and costs quite a bit but it is worth it.

Hope that helps

It removes the nerve endings from the tooth in question. This does two things:

1) Prevents that tooth from registering pain signals.

2) Removes the source of nutrition/maintenance from the tooth.
