Why do you need an expander for the top teeth but not the bottom?!

Question: Why do you need an expander for the top teeth but not the bottom?
Just curious, because my bottom teeth are crowded but will the braces fix that?

Answers:

Partly cosmetic....the top teeth tend to be more visible than the bottom ones and partly mechanical.... an expander for the top teeth can sit in the roof or the mouth more easily: one for the bottom teeth has to sit under the tongue which is uncomfortable and affects speech eating etc. Bottom teeth are usually spaced by extraction of the 'extras' taking care that the eventual spread still gives good opposition for biting, grinding, chewing etc. However research into methods continues and there are various types of expander now available. If your bottom teeth are causing you concern ask to see a specialist orthodontist. Best wishes on this ....and keep smiling!!!!

You might need a pallet expander on your top set of teeth but not the bottom because your top pallet is more crowded than your bottom. Braces will probably do the job on you bottom teeth but not the top (your top pallet probably needs a little extra work).
