Is deep cleaning at the dentist a total rip off?!

Question: Is deep cleaning at the dentist a total rip off?
I was told I had some 3mm+ depths on my last visit, now they want to do a deep cleaning for my teeth.

Nobody I know has ever heard of this...is it a total rip off? Seems like a scam, plus I have a feeling this will end up with lots of other follow up appointments....thoughts?

Answers:

You don't have to have it done. I was told the same thing, and was also told it is not necessary but to keep it in mind. It wasn't something they pushed me to do.
If that's what they're doing, I suggest finding a new dentist.

Not a scam, a deep cleaning sometimes called scaling and root planing is sometimes needed for deep pockets. Normal pockets are 3mm or less so you probably didn't need it.
