What will happen to my teeth/jaw if I don't wear my retainer after my brace!

Question: What will happen to my teeth/jaw if I don't wear my retainer after my braces come off?
Before I had braces my teeth were a little spaced and slightly crooked at the bottom and I had a round face. Now that I have braces my teeth are straight and there are no spaces between my teeth and I have a thinner face. I have 6 months left to wear my braces and then i have to wear my retainer. If I don't wear my retainer or if I just take off my braces now will my teeth and jaw go back to the way they were before I had braces? Im 17 years old. O yea I didn't even need braces to begin with because dentists told me that my teeth were fine so I just got em for the hell of it LOL.

Answers:

Your teeth will move and the gaps will reappear. The amount of movement varies with different patients but they will move towards where they were before you had braces. Orthodontic movement is possible because the bone around the teeth soften and after braces are taken off, the bone is still soft and needs time to reharden to keep teeth where they were moved to. That takes time and does not happen overnight. The normal wearing time is as long as you had braces on.

Your teeth will begin to move. My sisters freind had braces for 2 years after a couple weeks she stopped wearing her retainer and now it looks like she never even had braces.
