Why is having straight teeth so important?!

Question: Why is having straight teeth so important?
It's not like people got braces two hundred years ago. Why are they so common today?

I also have to decide if I want to get them. Due to various things my family put off getting them for several years, but now I'll be 18 in a few months and our insurance says I need to get them on by my 18th birthday for them to be covered. I kinda see that they're important and I'd like to have straight teeth, but I have a abnormally huge fear of the dentist. I had a hard enough time getting pictures of my teeth taken :/ (apparently my mouth is too small, so they just tug my cheeks to the point where it hurts)

My mom says I can chose to just not have them done.

I think I'll get them done, it seems important. But it also seems really silly to me. People were fine for hundreds of years without straight teeth. And I really really don't want to. I won't mind having them, I just hate the appointments. Apparently I may need to get some teeth pulled.

They say I need them for my crowded teeth and under bite.

It seems like toomuch work and trama for something that looks pretty and slightly improves function.

Answers:

Crooked teeth can cause health problems and pain. But also, in today's society, crooked teeth aren't found to be very attractive.

For many people(like me) notice teeth right when i meet someone. If someone has crooked teeth they may not be as attractive. And at the same time it feels really good knowing you have perfect straight teeth when you get your braces off :)

getting my braces off hopefully next month
