Wisdom teeth pulled 5 days ago and im still numb...?!

Question: Wisdom teeth pulled 5 days ago and im still numb...?
I had my wisdom teeth pulled last monday march 28. from what i could tell everything went fine. He got all of then out in under 20 Min's, and i only needed stitches in one (my lower left one) which he had to remove in two sections. the next day the pain was moderate i was able to get away with taking aleve to control the pain. My lower jaw was and still is swollen, but for the most part it wasn't that bad. Now the numbness didn't wear off until after i went to self but when i woke up it was all gone except for some spots on my left side ( the left side of my lip and my on the left as well) now my cheek isn't numb at all.everything is healing fine all the holes are closed and the knot "swelling" in my jaw has gone down a lot. i have looked up cases where ppl has had prolonged numbness and found that it can be something called Paresthesia and also that it takes some time to correct its self or possible not correcting its self at all. I am understandable scared shitless by the though of this and im just wanting to know if it being permanent is likely in my case, and it any one has ever had this happen to then for this long and still have the feeling come back. and i do want to add that when i first got it done and the pain was worse then there were times that i would feel like twitching or spasms in my lip and where the tooth was removed from. but it only lasted like 4 secs at best. thank you for taking the time out to help... btw i called the dentist several times and the front desk lady says its pretty normal but i just need reassurance

Answers:

I have seen it happen to one woman, but it is extremely rare. It can happen if the anesthetic is injected directly into the nerve. Unfortunately, there is no way to determine what the needle hits when you inject it into the gum. The dentist is not at fault. You pretty much have to have your wisdom teeth removed, and most people do not want it done without anesthetic.

From what I have heard, the majority of cases get the feeling back over time, but there is the possibility that might not happen.

According to this site, paresthesia is only permanent in 1% of cases:

If I were you I would take the word of the woman at the front desk. Paresthesia is usually caused by a stroke and produces numbness generally in the lower extremities. It is not associated with the mouth.

Hi
Sometimes this happens, the inferior dental nerve is damaged, this causes numbness, it can last for days or forever, did the dentist get you to sign an indemnity form prior to the operation? This covers him for this happening.
See how you go over the next few days, then ask to see the dentist to discuss this, and ask for a look at the xrays, get him to show you where the inferior dental nerve is on it and look to see if the tooth root is on it, this will explain what I have just told you, he wont give you the xray but he by law will have to forward it to another dentist of your choice, just make sure you take someone with you. Good luck
