FYI, mouthguards or splints do not fix or cure TMJ and an improperly designed appliance can make you feel worse. Properly designed, however, it should eliminate headaches (the most common symptom, especially in females) in a week and in two weeks at the most. Once the articular disk is stabilized and prevented from dislocating, the patient should be asymptomatic indefinitely until the permanent fix is undertaken. Of course, people who treat themselves could cause more harm than good.
