Canker sore behind wisdom tooth.?!

Question: Canker sore behind wisdom tooth.?
Never had one behind my wisdom tooth till recently i say about 3 days ago. Seems like it's going away but still its sore. Why do we get them?? About a year ago my upper back wisdom took has been coming out. Does that have anything to do? I do have to say that before i got the canker sore i had this extra skin like hanging on the back of my mouth, that is because of my wisdom tooth coming out. Are they contagious? is it even a canker sore? please Help..

Answers:

If this is not a canker sore, it could be a sore on your extra skin overhanging the wisdom teeth from biting down on it. Biting trauma usually goes away in 3-4 days.

Canker sores usually lasts about 10-14 days and occur because of a lot of reasons (allergies, stress, diet, menstrual changes in women, heredity). You might see if your canker sores are triggered by eating certain foods like peanuts, chocolate, hot and spicy foods, or citrus fruits. Avoid toothpastes with sodium lauryl sulfate.

If it's just a biting trauma, using regular Orajel or Ambesol is good enough for pain relief.

For canker sores, your best bet is to get a prescription from a dentist for either Aphthasol or Kenalog in Orabase. These medications tend to reduce the inflammation and ulceration that develop when canker sores occur. To get the maximum benefit, you really need to apply the ointment as soon as you think the sores are coming. If you wait until an ulceration is full blown, the healing will be delayed. You'll find the healing time can be less than a week rather than 10-14 days. (Orabase by itself will only relieve pain and may not promote early healing.)

Some people also have said that eating yogurt (containing active Lactobacillus acidophilus cultures) prevents further outbreaks of canker sores and helps heal sores faster. Some people also say that opening a capsule of Vit E and applying the liquid right on the sore for pain relief.

From a nutritional standpoint, make sure you're not deficient in folate, iron and vitamin B12. You might want to take a multivitamin tablet in an attempt to reduce future outbreaks.
