Why does my mouth get dry when I run?!

Question: Why does my mouth get dry when I run?
I'm 15 and play basketball and run track. During basketball conditioning, my mouth and throat get so dry that I run out of saliva and gag. But this doesn't happen outside.?. I've tried chewing gum I drink tons of water and I breathe through my nose and out my mouth. Please help I don't know what to do?!!?!

Answers:

well, one way to approach this is that you keep drink water. The thing is, don't drink too much at once, but little and frequently. like a sip every 10 minutes. before your extreme work out, u should have 2 days of preparing. for ur case, just try to drink frequent amount of water and see where it leads you. another case is that your brain is tricking you that u need water when you doesn't.

The reason for your mouth becoming dry during indoor basketball is likely a combination of the following:

-Increased release of sympathetic hormones changing the quality of your saliva (among other things)

-Heavy rapid breathing with your mouth open (even if you aren't doing it the whole time)

-Decreased humidity indoors

I am not sure there is a whole lot you can do about the above. It is likely that the symptoms will become less severe as your conditioning continues.

When you're doing the wind sprints and track running, you are breathing more rapidly. The passage of that much air through your mouth will dry out your mouth due to evaporation no matter which direction the air is moving. It is primarily a matter of science.

Think about it, a quarter inch of water on a six inch saucer placed outside on a windy day will evaporate faster than a six inch diameter pail sitting next to it, also with a quarter inch of water. In weather, this is referred to as the "wind chill factor".

BTW I'm just answering the question you asked in the heading. The others gave you an obvious answer... sip water while you run.

high school science and an article I recently read on wind chill.

Drink a cup of water every other hour. Also, if ur urine color is dark yellow go to the doctor
