You'll need a Bachelor's degree (4yrs) before you can go to dental school. After 4 years of dental school, you will either be a Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD) or a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), they are essentially the same and will allow you to practice general dentistry after completing all of the licensing exams. Cosmetic dentistry is not a specialty that requires additional schooling. The dental specialties that require another 3-5 years of training are Endodontist (root canal specialist), Oral Surgeon (extractions, implants and other surgeries of the face and mouth), Periodontist (gum specialist) and Orthodontist (Braces)
