The dentist told me I have 5 cavities, but I brush twice a day and floss daily. !

Question: The dentist told me I have 5 cavities, but I brush twice a day and floss daily. Can this happen?
I haven't had any cavities since I was a child, and I'm 20 now. This is my first time seeing this dentist, and I still can't believe I have 5 cavities. I use listerine after every meal, I brush twice a day, and I floss every night. It just seems a little far-fetched to me, because I had gone to my regular dentist less than 6 months ago, and she said I had great hygiene and no cavities. I just want to know if this can really happen if I'm doing everything right.

Thanks!

Yeah, it can happen - I was cavity-free until I was about 18 and now have a mouth full of amalgam. I believe that dentists are sometimes really motivated to find cavities, know what I mean? Cavities mean they get to do a filling, and you get to pay them. You can ask to see the xray showing the lesions, or to watch in the mirror as they point out the catch of the probe in the cavity. And you can tell the dentist that you'd like to wait until your next visit to do fillings if they are getting worse, or just see a different dentist if they can't convince you that you need fillings. Cavities don't get bigger all that fast. I had one that didn't get dire for like, 8 years (and yeah, I waited too long to get the filling because I was bitter about the dentist that filled my mouth with amalgam when I was too young to question)

Some people are definitely more prone to cavities than others. You could always get a second opinion too. This source proves how different dentists' opinions can differ and so a second opinion could be very beneficial. Good luck :)
