Is it true that in order to have braces, I need to have my wisdom teeth removed?!

Question: Is it true that in order to have braces, I need to have my wisdom teeth removed?
Hey everyone.

As a kid my orthodontist said I wouldn't need braces, but right now I feel like they would be worth it, because 1 tooth isn't growing straight and has a chain reaction on my other teeth and I wanted to get this fixed before it ends up in a mess.
My orthodontist said he could remove my wisdom teeth so things wouldn't get worse, or I could get braces. I asked him if my wisdom teeth would stay if I would get braces and he said they had to be removed if I would.

Is this true?
If so, why is this? Please explain.

Thanks everyone.

There will always be exceptions, but i am one and half years in braces and an adult and i did not require any of my wisdom teeth to be removed.

Some countries like America, remove wisdom teeth as a matter of course.
However times are changing and in the UK, Scotland in particular, the dentist/ orthodontist will try everything to ensure they remain in place.

The reason quoted to me was that removal of these teeth, in the longer term, had a detrimental effect on face shape. You basically lose bone when you lose teeth and that bone is what is keeping the shape of your mouth and lower face.

My teeth were very crowded, making my top four and bottom four teeth twist. My orthodontist used a combination of "spacers" between teeth and shaving of teeth to create space. None of this is painful. You need to discuss in more detail with your orthodontist to be sure u fully understand the reasons for removal.

Yes and the most common reason is that there would be too many teeth in the mouth making orthodontic movement more difficult; wisdom teeth also are so far back that they contribute very little to chewing. As evolution marches on, man's mouths are getting smaller but the number of teeth are remaining the same. Orthodontists like to have wisdom teeth that have erupted after braces are completed extracted because they think wisdom teeth will cause the lower front teeth to crowd up again due to forward pressure.

No, you don't have to have your wisdom teeth taken out before you have braces. I had braces for 3 years and then I took my wisdom teeth out. You can take your wisdom teeth out either before or after you have braces, because if you let them grow, they will push your teeth and cause them to go crooked. I suggest you do it before you have braces, or right after you get them done. But I'd do it sooner, just to be safe.

If you get braces and you already have wisdom teeth then it's best to get it removed because when you get your braces off, your wisdom teeth may obstruct your straight teeth and it may hurt.
