Is it true that when I get braces that my wisdom teeth first have to be removed?!

Question: Is it true that when I get braces that my wisdom teeth first have to be removed?
Hey everyone.

Currently 1 of my teeth is messing up the rest of my teeth. Not really bad, but still bad enough for me to want to get braces before it gets worse.
My orthodontist told me my wisdom teeth needed to be removed if I wanted braces. I forgot to ask him why though.

So, is it true that my wisdom teeth need to be removed and if so, why?

Asking because I would really like to keep all my teeth, even though I don't really use them to chew.

Thanks everyone.

Answers:

It really depends on how your teeth are situated and how the wisdom teeth are coming in. Most orthodontists WILL say that the wisdom teeth need to come out or all the ortho work will be messed up when the wisdom teeth DO come in.

Your wisdom teeth probably haven't even come through yet -- most people don't get them until they are 18 or older or even never.

I would say to listen to your dentist & have those wisdom teeth removed. The reason I say this is because a friend of mine who wore braces for over 2 years (when she was 14-16) and got perfectly straight teeth after the braces. Well, then her wisdom teeth started growing in when she was 18, and all the hard work she did trying to get perfect teeth was ruined. One of her front teeth is all the way pushed back. Now she has to get braces again, but can't afford it. See, when you have extra teeth growing in, it can mis-align everything else in place. Does this make sense? Sorry if I explained it wrong. Hope this helps.

I suggest your dentist wants to remove your wisdom teeth to earn himself more money! DO NOT allow him to touch your teeth again until he explains himself, then get a second opinion. I had all four of my wisdom teeth out when I was a teenager and have regretted it ever since.
