I was wondering if antibiotics (Amoxacillin) can cause diarrhea.?!

Question: I have a one year old and she has been on the medicine for about 3 days, and has been having really loose stools. So Im just thinking that it could just be the antibotics. Well please help if you can.

Thanks, Kellie

Absolutely, yes! This happens because the antibiotics can kill off some of the beneficial bacteria in the gut, and the change in intestinal flora can result in diarrhea or even possibly allow something called Clostridium dificile to gain a foothold.

If the problem for which the antibiotic was prescribed is controlled, you may not need to continue taking the amoxicillin. Call your physician for further advice, even on a weekend!

it can, yes. not always though.

Yes read the side affects this is one

They absolutely can. The antibiotic kills the natural flora in the intestines and makes food difficult to digest. Try giving her some active culture yoghurt or buttermilk to help restore her digestion

My hubby is taking Amoxocillian and one one the side effects is diarrhea, sorry hope she feels better.

Yes, all antibiotics can cause SOME stomach issues, because it is killing the good bacteria, along with the bad.
Give the child yogurt with the good bacteria in it, to replace it.
She will probably get a rash from the diarrhea.

Also, that is why many women get yeast infections from antibiotics... it kills the good stuff along with the bad.
But eating yogurt usually prevents this...
one cup or two a day.

Yes is will just bout every time!!! Can cause stomach cramps too.
Use the brat diet
Bananas
Rice
apple sauce
Toast (white bread)
also if it is her first time on it watch for rashes amoxacillin can cause allergic reactions, if you see a rash stop use and call dr right away.

Yes , anti-b's can cause diarrohea.
They're getting the toxins out of the system.
Make sure she has plenty of fluids.

yes usually affects me the same way..does the packet say to be taken with or before food.or on an empty stomach ?.usually if i don,t eat with it .it makes me that way too..good luck..hope she,s well in time for santa.....rose xx

Absolutely. In fact that is one of the most common side effects of antibiotics. Especially the "cillins" (penni, amoxi, etc). Make sure your daughter is taking the meds with food or milk and keep her WELL hydrated with pediasure.

Diarrhea is one of the side effects of Amoxacillin. Stop the same and the diarrhea would ideally settle. The question that i am interested to know is why your one year old is on antibiotics. If it is a common cold, it is usually caused by viruses and would not require antibiotics. It only requires symptom control.

Different people react to medicines in many different ways. Yes, you can, you need to tell your doctor so you can get on another antibiotic. If you are taking more than one medicine, the combination can also cause that. Make sure you list amoxacillin as a medicine you are allergic to.

Hi Kellie,

Yes, this is common. Don't worry. Use pedialite(sp?) to counteract it. Keep her hydrated.

yep, and amoxicillin happens to be one of the biggest offenders. probiotics (like in yogurt), and an over the counter antidiarrheal should do the trick.

Yes antibiotics kill bad and good bacteria, like you have in the intestine. Yogurt and probiotic drinks can help restore the natural flora (the bacteria that belong there) of the bowel.

By the way yeast infections and thrush can also occur while on antibiotics.

Do not stop the antibiotics, unless you check with your doctor.

the problem with antibiotics is they do not differentiate between the bacteria that should be in your system and the ones that should not. that means that the bacteria that help in digestion of food in your stomach, colon and small intestine are also flushed out. this is what causes the diarrhea. if you give her yogurt with "live" cultures, it will help keep the levels of 'good' bacteria up and lessen the effects of the antibiotics.

hope she feels better soon.

it can cause diarrhea if its taken improperly or just depending on the person see i had to take amoxacillin for my strep but i didnt get sick but my little brother got really sick so yeh

Yes, antibiotics can cause diarreah. It's a more common side effect of sulfa antibiotics like Septra, but Amoxicillin can cause it, too. It's also possible that your daughter picked up a mild stomach bug at the doctor's office. Sometimes it's really hard to tell whether something like that is from a virus or the side effect of a medication. The best thing to do is keep your little one hydrated and watch her. If she gets worse or if things don't improve in a day or two, call her doctor.
