Can sitting six hours at the computer daily be harmful?!

Question: Yes it can be very harmful. Not only physically but mentally and emotionally. If we are talking about a person who works with computers for their jobs, Most large companies ie; 3M, GE, MS, etc. have employees who are specifically hired to be the ergonomics instructors and consultants. I worked for 3M for awhile. We had to literally get up and stretch with specific stretches with her and she kept track of who did or didn't and it went on their performance report. But they made sure that everything from the chair position, your body position, the mouse and the keyboard you used position was just perfect for you including the distance the computer screen was a way from you. They taught you the correct posture to sit and how to bend, walk, stand, lift and many other things. They even put glare reduction filters on our monitors. Eye strain, headaches, stress, carpol tunnel, huched shoulders, compressed discs, hips and back out of alignment, and many others.

Now if we are talking about someone who is at home and just on their for fun, there are all the same things that you have to watch out for from above, but now as has already been mentioned, the lack of physical exercise which could lead to atrify of the muscles, muscle loss, the lack of vitamin A from not getting a enough sunlight into your body that keeps certain chemicals in your body from working correctly which lead to other things...

Now if you are sitting at the computer for that long and all you are doing is viewing pronographic material or other things of the like then all of your toughts will be centered on that constantly and not just at the computer. That may lead to distraction of your job duties or your school work your relationships, your interest in other things diminishes and all of the things that I mentioned above are there too.

So be wise, stretch often (standing every 20 min. or so for 3 min.), neck, shoulders, fingers, wrists, back, etc. and watch posture, chair height, computer keyboard, mouse, and monitor are correct.

Well I hope that helps.

well yes, because, your sitting there day after day, your not going outside, your not exercising, and your tailbone is always under pressure.

Alot of my clients are office workers sitting at a dest for a minimum of 6 and a half hours, and they are usually very stiff in the neck and upper back. I have seen where some actually start getting a hump on the lower part of the back of the neck from focusing on their screen so much. I have advised them to move more and do stretches from time to time while at work. Funny thing, their boss called me and thanked me.

It can be a strain to your eyes. but that depends on quality of monitor. It can hurt you back if not in a good supporting chair. a lot of people sit in front of computers for long periods because of there job requiring them to use computers. Other then that i don't believe they can harm you.

Absolutely
