I dug around on the net for a bit and found this:

"Physiological causes which can predispose or cause a person to gag include not being able to breathe through your nose properly, catarrh, sinusitis, nasal polyps, mucus in the upper respiratory tract, a dry mouth, and medications that cause nausea as a side effect. Certain medical conditions (gastrointestinal diseases) can also contribute to gagging."

The level you're describing is clearly not normal, and you might want to change doctors and bring a list of times when you gag - explain that it's not at normal times (like if you poke your throat by accident, or smell something awful etc) but rather ALL the time and that it's interfering with your life.

If you ever feel unable to breathe properly, go to an ER immediately.

Remember that sometimes an extreme gag reflex can be caused by psychological triggers - you might not even know what it is. Sexual trauma, fear of the dentist, a traumatising experience with choking on something.... all of these are possible underlying causes of seemingly random gagging.

Good luck... you have my sympathy - this sounds awful.

How about turtlenecks? (Just kidding.) What you need, Sweetie, is a psychiatrist, and I'm not kidding now. :)
