Can anyone WITH MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE tell me what is going on with my heart?!?!

Question: I've been laying in bed at my friend's house and for like an hour, I've been getting this weird feeling in my chest. It's happened before, but never for this long (like an hour!). I was reading a book (George Orwell's 1984 if you're curious), and was going to take a nap but it wouldn't go away. My heart is beating faster and harder than normal but I'm not even moving I'm just laying here. my heart kind of tickles, and I feel anxious, like there's something I'm supposed to be doing right now that I'm not (but there's nothing i need to do). My arms and legs feel like the "restless leg syndrome" symptoms that I heard on the commercial, like they just wanna move for no reason but i'm not having a seizure or anything.

I'm 18, 5'7", 138 lbs., I don't exercise, & eat whatever I want.
I'm a college freshman on winter break, I don't drink, don't smoke, don't do drugs. I'm usually very busy when in school. I'm going to see a doctor when i'm back on campus, but i just wanna knows whats up?

1984's a good read. =)

I actually experience that myself from time to time. From your description of what happened, I would guess that it's attributed to stress (it could also mean you're having a panic attack thinking about your heart beat--therefore increasing its rate). The restless movement of legs is also quite normal nowadays. Since you said that you eat whatever you want and don't excercise, it could probably mean that you have a lot of stored energy and you're body's trying to utilize it in whatever way it could. I don't think it's really necessary to see a doctor but if it would make you feel better, then go for it.

EDIT:
The only thing I can think of now is tachycardia so I did a quick search on the subject:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tachycardia
And other possible causes:

Pathology is a pain in the ***.

Feel better.

i have no idea but if i were u i would definetly call the doctor or go to the ER cause there might be something really wrong like a heart murmur

The only way to diagnose your problem accurately is to go to a doctor, RIGHT NOW!!! This is your heart and you're just lying there asking random people on yahoo? Call 911 or at the very least the nurse line at a local hospital and talk to someone you KNOW is medically qualified. Did I really just have to tell you this?

First off, 1984...good book, read it in high school.

How is the weird feeling in your chest? Is it pain? Is it tight? Are you breathing heavily? Are you sweating?

I would first get up and walk around for a bit, take your mind off of it, and try to calm down. If in about 30 minutes you don't feel better, go to the hospital

hello, I believe it is called an anxiety attack, I will not go further. go online and look up anxiety attacks, if you are truly worried make an appointment with a Cardiologist for a workup.

I think that your having a bit of a panic attack! I suffer with these as well and you just need to take a deep breath and calm down. Are you stressed at all? Take things easy and slow down! Good luck and Good Night!! xxx

maybe u need to work out a little bit or start jogging and eat right or it can be a small blood clot or maybe check it out with ur doctor im just in trainin

It;s possible you have a mineral imbalance. This can cause the type of feelings you describe. As to which mineral may be deficient, I can't say. Some people swear B-12 helps, others like calcium and still others go for other trace minerals. I was low on potassium due to a water pill. It;s best to check with your doc about this if you feel particularly btohered, but generally, the imbalance is temporary. However...if it gets worse, you feel like passing out, dizzy, nauseated, have a severe headache, cold sweats...you might want to head for an ER.

It actually sounds like an anxiety attack. I do that a lot before something huge, like my 8th grade graduation last year!!! When your heart is beating that fast believe it or not, put your head on someone elses chest, and listen to their heartbeat for a few minutes. The sound of their heart actually makes yours slow down. Once you calm your heart rate down, you should feel better. Your legs are actually shaking internally, but not on the outside. All of the adrenaline is rushing to your heart and is making it faster trying to slow it down, and that is why your legs are shaky. I read medical books for a living pretty much, so I hope I helped!!!

Allergy, maybe MSG, did you eat anything like fast food, cheap chinese or 'Round Table pizza?

How sure are you its your heart? Chest pains maybe? Your heart may be beating faster because you worry. Do you have a history of heart conditions in your family? Lots of the time you see symptoms on adds it makes a person worry, you start looking for a symptom and you get paranoid. Im sure its just chest pains, but you can make sure, call a medical hotline, see a doctor. Hope your better =)

EDIT: I agree with the people, anxiety, relax, sing a song, close your eyes, prey, glass of hot milk. that will do the trick =)

check your cholesterol levels and your blood pressure. I used to work as a paramedic and these were the common problems to situations similar to this.

see a shrink !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
think you have to much time on your hands to think of all these symptoms
gain a few pounds you are to thin

Have you been taking a lot of coffee, cola drinks or "energy" drinks? Caffeine can cause a tachycardia (fast heart rate), feelings of restlessness and palpitations. If that is the case it will wear off soon after you stop. You could be having a run of Supra-ventricular tachycardia (SVT). You should check your pulse and if over 140 beats per minute SVT is possible. You can terminate SVT by coughing vigorously a few times or by performing the valsalva manoeuvre (hold your breath and push down like you were constipated). See if that helps. However, If it happens again, especially if you also start to feel lightheaded you should check in with your doc before you get back to campus.
