What is this noise that occurs every single night? Please help.?!

Question: I live in a HDB flat somewhere in the west. Every night, there is a noise, something that sounds like a beep. It occurs at the rate of about 4 times per second. You can only hear it when there is relative silence (i.e. at night). It is very annoying. Some of the neighbours and myself have been losing sleep for years due to this. We cannot report the noise to the police as it subtle and is almost impossible to pinpoint it's location.
It occurs from about 10 pm to 7 am. So it occurs throughout the night.

Many nights, I don't sleep at all. Please help me guess the source of the noise. Or what I can do so that I can sleep at night. Your help is very very much appreciated. Thank you.

It probably doesn't occur only at night; it's just that night is the best time to hear it since it's quieter than day.

Best guess would be something like an alarm clock, or fire alarm battery dying, or cell phone battery dying. (Are you sure you mean 4 times per second? I'd think that's not very subtle and the police would be able to hear it! And if it's loud enough for you and neighbors to hear it and not be able to sleep, the police should be able to hear it.)

In the meantime, play music when you go to sleep, or wear earplugs. Take sleeping pills if you have to.

cricket's?

maybe its an alarm?

Maybe a difficult to see smoke detector with a deat battery?

maybe it is a smoke detector and the battery is going dead. it will give off an audible beep on certain intervals to let you know it is about to die. It might be in the hall or in a neighbors apartment.

maybe a smoke detector that needs a replacement battery or someone's alarm system.

good luck with this- over the web it's almost impossible to deduce what/where the noise is.
If I had to speculate- I'd say smoke detector that activates at night- or perhaps something to do with an alarm system? Have you spoke to the land lord about this issue?

Wow, if it's crickets, I'm going to die laughing.

Maybe some type of an alarm system in a dwelling near you. Why don't you put a small tape recorder in between your window and screen for a night or so and get it on tape. If it was something as simple as an alarm they could just put it on silence mode.

I'm pretty sure that it is a Smoke Detector with a "almost" dead battery ... 'cause I had the SAME problem ... the thing is ... try verifying every single smoke detector in ur house and ask ur close neighboors to do the same ... my fiancee couldn't sleep cause of it too ... ME .. nahhh I can sleep even if theres noise ...

Try taking some MELATONIN before u go to sleep it's completely natural and it will help you sleep ... is very good for a lot of other stuff too. Read this info if u want to know more: http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/melat...
