Is there any way to prevent head lice?!

Question: Lice is going rampant through out both of my daughters' school.
So far we have been lucky and they have not contracted lice. Obviously, I would like to keep it that way.
Is there anything I can mix with their shampoo or spray in their hair that lice don't like? Please only suggest natural products that I have at home or can buy at the store.
I know that there is a line of shampoo products that claim to prevent lice but, I'm not paying $50 for a bottle of shampoo.
So, does anyone know of something cheap and common I could use instead?
Thank you and Merry Christmas!

tea tree oil is the best nit preventer you can get on the market, its cheap, natural and does the trick.....you can buy a wee bottle from the chemist, and cus its oil you only need a small amount to which you brush through the hair.......you can also buy various tea tree shampoo's , like the natural herbal collection , you will find there are many cheap and affordable shampoo and conditioners for only a few pound... the tea tree oil works best for my children. and if they do manage to somehow catch the lil blighters baby oil brushed through the hair and left for half hour and then run throug with a nit comb is more affective then major head lice brands, hope that helps.

if u blow dry our hair on hot..........lice hate hate hate it when its hot......just be careful of burning your hair

Tea Tree shampoo is great for repelling headlice.

There are a lot of brands and they're definately not expensive. I recommend The Body Shop's, if you have that where you live. They're very good with natural products.

If they do catch them, there's a new head lice comb called "Nitty Gritty Nit-free comb". It's designed to get rid of nits more effectively than other combs, and from what I've heard it is VERY good.

Make sure they don't share anything while they are at school.
Check them daily.
Change their pillow cases every day just in case until the epidemic is over.

We had that problem once. We washed heads every night but one daughter got them anyway. I know of products (from doctor) to "get rid of" but none to prevent. Sorry. Good luck . Happy Christmas

Here is a good idea. Make sure that she doesn't share hats or any clothes for that matter. Make sure that she doesn't touch other people's head's. Also, make sure that she washes her hair

I don't think you can use any shampoo to PREVENT lice. I do think you can get rid of them with baby oil, though. You have to completely cover your hair with baby oil, let it sit for a half hour, then wash with regular shampoo and rinse, rinse, rinse.

To prevent your children from getting lice, they must use only their brushes and combs and avoid contact with kids who have lice. It's very difficult to keep your children from getting head lice unless they follow those instructions thoroughly.

Don't wash the hair too much, lice like clean heads.

And when I was in Kindergarten, I kept getting head lice. After the school did some investigating, they figured out that the girl that sat next to me has had head lice for about 9 months, and the girl's parents just didn't want to pay for the treatment. After the school arguing with the girl's parents for about 2 months, the school finally caved and paid for her treatment. So, if you let your kid suffer for a year, the school might pay the $50 for you :-D
