How are you congested? Chest tightmess, nasal passages/sinuses? All?
Also, keep in mind that some medical conditions may make it dangerous for you to do any or all of these, alone, or in conjunction with two or more....
If you are very light in weight and/or young in age, you may need to adjust dosages, or consult with you doctor. If you are under the care of a doctor, consult with the office...
If you are taking OTC meds, check the labels!! Many have multiple ingredients. For example, if the drug you are taking has acetaminophen in it - don't take extra Tylenol!! (It's active drug is acetaminophen or APAP). Don't mix analgesics (pain/discomfort control) like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen. Choose only one. Follow directions on the label. It may differ from brand to brand, preparation to preparation!!!
Aches and pains/discomfort control: Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Ibuprofen (Motrin or Nuprin), Aspirin (Bayer), or Naproxen (Aleve).
Oral decongestant: Sudafed PE (help to open nasal passages) amongst many others. Look for an ingrediant that states it is a decongestant.
Mucolytic (break up mucous): Guiafenisin
Antihistimine: diphenhydramine (Benadryl) amongst many others, look for an ingrediant that states it is an antihistimine. May make you drowsy.
Nasal spray like Afrin, or it's generic equivalent. It will open up the nasal passages. I love it for overnight use, so I can breathe while I sleep!!
You will get overwhelmed by all the choices at the pharmacy. I am sure that the pharmacist will be more than happy to help you choose the right drug/preparation for you.
get an inhaler
take a hot shower, breath in the steam.
