I had the same problem. I am nineteen now, and I still have a fixation with having things in my mouth, but I am able to control it.

The thumb sucking gave me TMJ, something you do NOT want to have to endure, it has to do with your jaw freezing and popping and such, it gives you migranes quite often.

Try to find something else that makes you feel more relaxed. Or, do not go to bed until you are too tired to even think about placing your thumb in your mouth. The upward thrust of your thumb all night does cause major jaw problems, as I have found out. Another option would be to wean yourself off of it, by reminding yourself what you are doing when you are doing it.

Do you have a blanket or special toy from childhood that could render the same effect as the thumb sucking does?

omygod me too!

im serious!

and from what i hear, u should stop. its not good for the jaw or something...... idk about threats...

good luck!

Keep it up, it's good practice.

It will eventually cause a serious overbite if it hasn't already.

it doesnt really pose any threats, but people kind of think that it is a childish habit. if you're really stressed try something else like a stress toy.

Have you thought about chewing gum when you feeling stressed.

Well, you can get skin infections from the long term friction.

its actually very bad for your teeth it puts stress on them and will form to it just like braces put stress on your teeth to straighten them out so you really should stop

Hey I'm 12 and when I am really tired or stressed i suck my thumb. I dont think there's anything wrong with it hey it helps sometimes. I am trying to stop because you may end up with buck teeth.

Yeah, you should stop. It makes your teeth stick out after a while from the pressure. Kind of like Braces.

Im a boy and i stopped at about 10 and a half. I stopped by wearing that clear, colourless disgusting tasting nailvarnish on it. It really worked because whenever i put it my thumb in my mouth, i gagged, and even when i tried to be tactial and wash it off, it would still taste sick. Anyway, sucking your thumb for so long makes it really shrivelled, and I mean permanently, and also, you wont be able to get braces because they force your front teeth forward. The nailvarnish is easy to find in chemists.

I used to do it too, and i put on this nail polish helps. It tastes nasty so when you put it in your mouth you get out of the habit... When you suck your tumb you get really crooked teeth.

a 35 year old beautiful intelligent lady i know still occasionally sucks her thumb it's a stress reliever! i also know a28 year old woman same scenerio . i imagine their are many people who still engage in this childhood comfort, oh by the way one of the ladies wears a retainer to keep her smile nice..only when she goes to bed

i say you should stop because it can cause a serious and one time my friend kept sucking her thumb and she was close to getting it cut off. i forget y but its not a good habit.

well most ppl would say that something is wrong with this. but if u are stressed or trying to sleep, ur doing it to help you. the main thing is germs and what toehrs might say. if u can help not doing it in public, then u might want to(in order tnot to attract attention) just don't lose yourself in public and forget

If thumb sucking comforts you that's good. But the thing is you have to find another outlet for your stress, like a stress ball, just squeeze it to your heart's content.

It might've become an automatic reaction for your thumb to shoot to your mouth when something's wrong but you have to grow out of it. I'm telling you, stress balls are the key.

It can be very addictive, so basically the longer you keep doing it, the harder it will be to stop.

You can also develop buck teeth from thumb sucking.

I'm pretty sure you know its pretty embarrassing, so if the stress ball doesn't work try deep breathing. Deep breath in and out, but breathe through the nose, they say its better that way.

Anyway, hope this helped. Good Luck to you! :-)

As others have mentioned, the only threat is to your teeth, and perhaps dignity if you get caught.

It's an addiction, like any other and the way to stop is much the same, one day at a time ... one hour at a time ... even one minute at a time. If your thumb starts feeling "dry", try just rubbing the tip against the front of your teeth briefly to wet it, and with time the urge should lessen.

If you find you suck it in your sleep try sleeping with your hand under the pillow or somewhere it won't be so easy to subconsciously slip into your mouth.

U should stop cuz i have braces now cuz i use 2 suck on my thumb and i had got a gap so i wanted braces....so i got them and now i dont cuz when i go to dentist they will tighten them up and they hurt really....so its best 4 u to stop suckin yo thumb and im 14 right now i was 13 when i got them

I hope u stop
It isnt fun

you're young be eventually you'll break out of it

I am the 28 year old that rainbow22 referred to. I suck my thumb proudly. its better than chewing tobacco, isn't it? i suck ambidextrously, in the car, at home, and in bed with my hubby, who only minds if i drool. its not like some horrible habit you must stop. oh, btw, i have beautiful teeth!

i stopped wen i was about the same age...u just have to believe taht u can d it....lay with ur hands undre ur stomache at night thats how it worked 4 me
