Daughter has a virus with high temp but her hands & feet are freezing?!

Question: She is 3 & we have been to the doctor this morning, he diagnosed a chest infection & she has been given a steroid pump to help her breath & antibiotics, when we got back she was asleep in her buggy so i lifted her onto the sofa & she slept with her coat, socks & gloves on for 30min, she woke asking for her coat to come off & her whole little body is boiling to touch but her hands & feet are freezing even with her fleece gloves on indoors !!
Should i ring the surgery again? she is still sleeping on the sofa, I have taken off her gloves & coat & covererd her in a blanket but don't know what elkse to do for her, she has had neurofen to help her temp but why are her extremities so cold?

my little girl is 17 months and she had a bad viral infection a few weeks ago. she is still recovering. her hands and feet felt cold too. If you are worried call your doctor or nhs direct on 08454647

I would ring the surgery, to be safe

cover the extremities only.

I would call again. Sometimes in children they have different areas where they carry their fever more. I work at a daycare and there's a boy there that when he has a fever, you can only tell (without taking his temp.) by touching the back of his neck. His neck can be warm during a fever, and the rest of him be cool. But I would still call anyway incase there's a circulation problem of some sort. Good luck & Hope your daughter gets better.

I'm no doctor but that sounds like the flu or a case of pneumonia you might wanna give the doc a quick call and ask him/her if that's at all possible.

give her cold compress (use damp face towel soaked in water with ice, squeeze out the water before applying) on her forehead, armpit, and groin. do these simultaneously until fever subsides.
put a bottle of hot water wrapped in towel (the towel will stabilize the temperature of the hot water to prevent burn) to the soles of her feet.
Better have her admitted to the hospital. Too high fever can cause grave complication.

She's fighting a virus and infection so her body is using all it's defences to burn it off, so to speak. Make sure she is warm and comfortable. Tylenol for the headaches and pain so other parts of her system can rest while others do their work. Keep the fluids going into her, anything. Chicken Noodle soup, Ice Cream, Jello, juices to prevent dehydration and to push the fluids out helping her system to work. Many have forgotten the "old ways", the way our colds and flu was treated. Still applies today, except we used Aspirin then, now Tylenol, Rest, warm n comfortable, lots of fluids and Aspirin or Tylenol We seemed to have survived.

it will take a couple of doses of the antibiotics before they work. she should be at least 30% better om 24 hours. of she gets worse get her checked out, kids crash fast. you are the best one to know if things are improving or staying the same or at the worst getting worse. children tend to sleep when they are ill, but it should be restful, and they should be rousable. i ask my kids to touch their nose or to point to their mouth etc. just to check that they don't have some impairment. if her extremeties are still a good colour and she can move them that is good. touch them until they blanch (go white) and count, they should go back to the original colour in under 2 seconds, remember to look at a watch to be sure. if it takes longer or she has any sort of blotchy, non blanching rash then you need to have her seen by a dr imediately. by non blanching i mean if you place a glass over the rash and it does not go white, and then take it's previous colour when the glass is removed, this is non blanching. or if you as a parent are worried for any reason, then have her seen again. kids crash fast and they are so precious. you know what is normal. if there is not temp, no rash, no history of injury, if she is rousable and her condition hasn't deteriorated, then it is prob safe to keep on with the antibiotics. only if you are comfortable with this, if not, dr.

omigosh, she has an infection. you should the doctor immediately or bring her to the nearest hospital. its dangerous maybe its a kind of infection (eg. pneumonia, typhoid fever, influenza or sars) that it should be properly medicated. it should be observed by the doctors and nurses. bring her now before its too late.

My guess is that her body wants to bring it's temperature up to aid her immune system in fighting the infection. To do so, it will shunt blood away from the extremities and redirect it to her vital organ to make sure that the areas where the infection can do most damage are better protected. This means that the hands and feet wil receive less blood than normal. Since blood is warm (roughly 39C), having less of it present will make the hand/feet cold.

The same thing happens when you become hypothermic; your hand and feet become cold to keep your internal organs warm and well-supplied.

If the fever gets worst, you should not hesitate to call the hospital!! If the fever gets very very bad, very rapidly, you can always try to put an ice pack on the inner thigh (where the major artery is) to cool her down until you can get to the hospital.
