When kids at 10 start smoking and get addicted where does the blame lie there?!

Question: The kids have seen someone else smoking and are obviously getting the ciggs from somewhere. As far as the "blame", I don't know. A great many people still smoke in this country. In my state, smoking is no longer allowed in public places. This includes eating establishments of all kinds. I am not sure about bars as no longer go to them. Many states still permit smoking in some public places such as those mentioned because they are afraid of losing business. My point is, kids don't just pick this up at home. unfortunatly, i smoke! i have smoked for over 40 years!! I no longer enjoy it! I never how addicted to nictine I was!! I have had to do some hard things in my life...I am a single mom who raised 3 kids, got my GED and went to college times 2, i am an RN Manager/Superviser!! I have to say quitting smoking is the hardest thing I have ever had to do!!! And it's not because I don't want to. I haven't given up...I will, one day be able to quit all together!! Here again, the point is, as long as kids see adults and other kids smoke, they may want to try it!! Back in the 70's, when my kids were born just about everyone smoked, everywhere however my oldest son has never smoked and my daufgter quit 7 years ago and has never looked back. There is hope for young kids. Sorry for going on!!! THE BLAME LIES WITH THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY!!! IF THE PRODUCT WERE NOT THERE, OUR YOUNG ONES WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO START A VERY, VERY ADDICTING AND SERIOUSLY UNHEALTHY HABIT!!!

The parents.

The lack of parenting

Parents !

With the parents.

A ten year old need firm guidelines and boundaries.

With the kid, of course

i say them self

The parents, or Bush...Just kidding. It is the parents. Why aren't they watching their kid?

Their parents and teachers, unless they already knew the consequences.

I suppose in some ways the parents are to blame.

there mum and dad
without a doubt
bring them up right and there wont do that

First of all the parents. They must be the ones to ensure checks on their children. And secondly the media is to blame.

Since being able to judge correctly starts at age 12, the blame would go to the media, parents, teachers, and peers.

The child at 10 is old enough to know the difference between right and wrong. Shame on the adult who sets the bad example. This is exactly why younger kids are being held accountable for crimes they commit, instead of a slap on the wrist, they get maximum punishment in the form of of prison time.

I think kit has to do with parents, but i know people who have great kids and one horrible little boy, he was treated the same as the rest of them and they're great parents, i think it has a lot to do with the society you live in and the friends they make, my street is horrible, there are so many kids running around doing whatever they want (thats the parents!) and they have influence on other kids because, well thats what they live in.
But it depends on the kid, the parents, the friends etc.

10 years old is an age where kids know right from wrong. I am a middle school teacher and it makes me sick on how much people blame things on the parents. If a 10 year old picks up a marlboro and lights it, he or she knows exactly what they are doing! How about we start holding kids accountable in this country!!

Now, of course, there are always exceptions to that rule, but it gets abused in the public school system I know that for sure!

The parents or lack thereof. Someone is providing the kid with the smokes.
Wonder why the parents can't smell it?

Smoking at an early age , we all went through that , it's call peer pressure , as well as a sense of a new found "independence" from the mundane world at home .

society in general because nobody is willing/able to stop it happening,Parents can't be with kids 24/7 and when people are willing to sell/supply ciggies to kids and nobody is able to stop them something has to change be honest if you saw a 10 year old smoking would you try and stop them?if not why not?

The blame lies with the 10 yr old that started smoking! I know that you want to blame the parents but they did not buy the cig. for the child and it was the 10 yr olds decision alone to do this. What is the deal with placing blame? We each and everyone of us are responsible for what we personally do.

Mom, dad, peer pressure, friends, siblings smoking. I don't beileve there is only one person to blame, it's more like the crowd of people your kid got into.

I'd say, due to personal experience, their friends, peer pressure is usually the reason if they are not very strong willed and want to look cool, that was how i started smoking so young, didn't help that i had an older sister and hung around with her and her friends and i just wanted to 'fit ' in.
I don't think parents can control what there children do when they are out with there friends.

Most definitely the parents

I think if your parents smoke you are likely to smoke. So yeah, I guess the parents fault.

Mainly the parents but can be stupid friends.
