Celexa and alcohol?!


Question: I haven't touched a beer in months but these holidays i want to party and forget about eveything. I take Celexa for anxiety everyday (20mg)... what can happen if i mix it with alcohol?

Well the answer really depends. You see Celexa is an antidepressant that works by boosting the amount of serotonin in your brain. Alcohol has the absolute opposite effect, as you ingest it it decreases serotonin. So on the mood side of things it could make you prone to feeling depressed. On physical level, both alcohol and citalopram will have to be processed by the liver and the liver does like having to do too much at once so that could mean the alcohol has a much more potent effect on you than it normally would since the liver can't keep up. I would highly recommend calling up your doctor or pharmacist to get a complete overview of the risks associated with mixing but in general you wouldn't be the first person to safely mix the two.
