Zits are caused by "clogs" in the pores of your skin. They can come from poor hygiene (lots of dirt/sweat on your face), genetics, hormones, or over-cleaning (dry skin overproduces oil to compensate for the natural oils you strip away when you wash your face too often, causing more zits).
The kind that don't come to a head but just cause a red bump and hurt to touch are hormonal, not caused by anything you have or haven't done except for being a teenager. The only thing you can do is stop touching it and wait for it to go away on its own. The more you touch it, the more you deposit dirt and oils from your fingers onto the skin, which can cause MORE zits.
